| KUWAIT STATE Kuwait is an oil-rich Arab country (more than 10% of the worlds estimated oil reserves) with an area of 17,820 sq.Km. situated at the north-western tip of the Persian Gulf. It's territorial waters include nine islands and a coastline that is 290Km long. The country is bordered on the north and west by Iraq (242Km), on the south and west by Saudi Arabia (222Km) and on the east by the Persian Gulf. Before the Iraqi invasion in the 2 August 1990, less than 40% of the population were Kuwaiti's. The population of Kuwait has always been so small that the country has had to rely on foreign workers. By 1992 the population of Kuwait had fallen to less than half its number on 2 August 1990. Nearly 400,000 Palestinians were expelled, and most Sudanese and Yemenis because they did cooperate with the Iraqi regime. Kuwaiti's today is about 1,000,000 and voting for the National Assembly is restricted to Kuwaiti descended from men living in the country before 1920. BEGINNING OF VIOLATION In June 1961 Britain granted independence to Kuwait. Iraq which had long claimed Kuwait was part of southern Iraq argued that Kuwait had been separated from it illegitimately. In July, British troops were dispatched at Kuwaiti's request to defend it against Iraqi threats. Iraq eventually backed down from its claim. In May 1973 Iraq invaded Kuwait and occupied the border post of Samitah, a conflict ensued and Iraq later withdrew in 1974. THE OCUPPATION On the 2th August 1990 Iraq invaded Kuwait and on 16th January 1991, after the failure of international diplomatic efforts and sanctions, a 28 member military coalition under U.S.A. command launched the Desert Storm. Kuwait was liberated on the 27 February 1991. In 14th April 1993 an Iraqi plot was uncovered and foiled to assassinate former President George Bush during his visit to Kuwait. During the 1990's, Kuwait been under the Iraqi threats specially in 1994 and 1998 when the Iraqi regime army multituded in the south of Iraq. In 21 March 2003 the U.S.A . and U.K. started operation Iraq freedom against the Iraqi regime after the denial of having chemical and biological weapons. Kuwait is the only country having border with Iraq gave the U.S.A. and U.K. privileges to use it's land to enter Iraq and begin the operation. On the 9th of April 2003 the Iraqi regime was thrown and on the 13th December 2003 the American special forces lounched operation Red Dawn and Captured Saddam Hussein in the north of Iraq. |
| TERRORIST ATTACKS During the 1980's, Kuwait experienced several terrorist threats and attacks, including one in 1985 which attempted to assassinate the late Emir " Ruler " by suicide bomb attack. In 1982 Iranian jets attacked Kuwait oil refinery. In 1986 Iran began attacks on Kuwaiti oil tankers and in 1987 Kuwait asked the US to provide Naval escorts for it's shipping, which they provided. Kuwait civilian airplanes where hijacked, The first in 1984 and the second in 1988 where three of the royal family beside many kuwaiti's where held hostages, but that didn't change kuwait policy towards terrorism.
